Eating disorders are growing at an alarming rate. It is believed that, modern day media influences have played a significant part in the increase by promoting thinness and linking it with beauty, peer acceptance, sexual and financial success, self-esteem, morality, and health. These connections have intensified the pressures on young people to acquire and preserve the ‘perfect bodies’, whether that be a ironing board or washing board stomach. Those who are at most risk from trying to reach this level of ‘perfection’ are those who are genetically prone to perfectionism, suffer low self-esteem or a cloudy identity, or victims of bullying.
